1883 - 1973
Gabrielle Ray (real name Gabrielle Elizabeth Clifford Cook) made her stage debut at the age of ten. Her acting career continued until she married in 1912. During this time she was regarded as one of the most beautiful English stage actresses. An accomplished dancer and singer, she was best known for her roles in Edwardian musical comedies. The portrait pictures by the well known photographers of the late 19th and early 20th century captured her elegance and beauty making her one of th eperiods most photographed actresses. Her image can be found on hundreds of different postcard designs. Following her divorce in 1914 she returned to the stage for a brief time. Occasional performances over the next ten years ended with her declining health. She spent the next forty years in a sanatorium dying at the age of 90. |
